Sweat / Hyperhidrosis  Treatment

Hyperhidrosis or severe sweating can affect up to 3% of the population. It can affect any part of your body, and patients typically come in to treat either their underarms, hands, chest, forehead, feet or even their whole body. Dr Garsing Wong has been a member of the International Hyperhidrosis Society since 2007. Dr Wong personally injects all his patients as opposed to some clinics that delegate this task to more junior members or nursing staff. Dr Wong feels that there is definitely an art involved to get the best treatment outcome, and sometimes the treatment needs to be combined to prescription medication for very severe cases of hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis or severe sweating can be extremely embarrassing, and will even severely limit your wardrobe to wearing only black!

 

The first line of treatment is always to try using antiperspirants.

 

For some patients, topical medication is not enough or patients can be allergic to the topical medications. There are some oral medications that can help - however side effects are common with these types of medication.

 

Treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) with Botox® is extremely successful and safe way to treat this condition. The Botox® which is often used to relax the muscles that causes wrinkles in our face, temporarily blocks the nerves in the underarm that causes sweating as well, giving a fast, effective treatment for a potentially embarrassing problem.

 

The treat can last up to 201 days (6.7months - source Botox® prescribing information dated August 2009). Some patients find it helpful to time the treatments with Botox® in mid Spring, so that the effect can last throughout summer and into Autumn, thereby reducing the need for treatment to only once a year. For some patients, the treatment can be effectively combined with both topical and oral medication.

 

Does it hurt?

Topical anaesthetic is applied to the region prior to treatment to make the area more comfortable. For the hand or feet area, local anaesthetic is administered to numb the sensation to the region.  After the procedure, you can drive home or return to work.

How long does it take?

You will need to put aside an hour in total.

 

What are the side effects?

Botox® is safe and effective. Although there may be some variations in effect for different patients, it does decrease the amount of sweating to the region effectively. However everyone has different expectations, and it is important that these are realistic. You will not completely stop all sweating in the treated area. The main side effect is that there can be bruising at the injection site.

BOTOX® is a Prescription Medicine containing 100 units of botulinum toxin type A for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine.


Cautions: People with defective neuro-muscular transmission disorders, infection at site of injection, glaucoma, pregnancy and lactation.

Signs and symptoms of low blood sugar may include dizziness or light-headedness, blurred vision, anxiety, irritability or mood changes, sweating, slurred speech, hunger, confusion or drowsiness, shakiness, weakness, headache, fast heartbeat, or feeling jitterykidney problems (kidney failure). In people who have kidney problems, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting may cause a loss of fluids (dehydration), which may cause kidney problems to get worse. It is important for you to drink fluids to help reduce your chance of dehydrationsevere stomach problems. Stomach problems, sometimes severe, have been reported in people who use Wegovy®. Tell your healthcare provider if you have stomach problems that are severe or will not go awayserious allergic reactions. Stop using Wegovy® and get medical help right away, if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; severe rash or itching; fainting or feeling dizzy; or very rapid heartbeatchange in vision in people with type 2 diabetes. Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in vision during treatment with Wegovy®increased heart rate. Wegovy® can increase your heart rate while you are at rest. Tell your healthcare provider if you feel your heart racing or pounding in your chest and it lasts for several minutesdepression or thoughts of suicide. You should pay attention to any mental changes, especially sudden changes in your mood, behaviors, thoughts, or feelings. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any mental changes that are new, worse, or worry youfood or liquid getting into the lungs during surgery or other procedures that use anesthesia or deep sleepiness (deep sedation). Wegovy® may increase the chance of food getting into your lungs during surgery or other procedures. Tell all your healthcare providers that you are taking Wegovy® before you are scheduled to have surgery or other procedures The most common side effects of Wegovy® may include: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdomen) pain, headache, tiredness (fatigue), upset stomach, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, low blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, gas, stomach flu, heartburn, and runny nose or sore throat.
