What is Restylane®?

Restylane® was developed by Q-Med, a rapidly growing biotechnology and medical device company that primarily develops, manufactures and markets medical implants. Most of the products are based on the company's patented NASHA technology for the production of stabilised non-animal hyaluronic acid.  Q-Med has recently been aquired by Galderma in 2011.  Galderma is a pharmaceutical company founded by Nestle and L'Oreal in 1981 which exclusively focused on dermatological products.  Restylane Perlane has now been rebranded by Galderma to Restylane Lyft ®.

Restylane® improves patient's natural looks by adding and restoring volume to the skin. It is often and safely combined with Botox® so that it can smooth out lines and wrinkles, to create fuller lips and clearer facial contours as well as help to rejuvenate the skin.

All Restylane® family of products are prefixed with Restylane®. The flagship product is just called Restylane®, which has 20mg/ml of hyaluronic acid. Restylane® has 100,000 particles per miillilitre. For areas that require more structural support such as the nose, chin or teartrough region, Dr Garsing Wong prefers to use the larger and hence thicker product called Restylane® Perlane (often abbreviated to Perlane® now been rebranded by Galderma to Restylane Lyft ®), which has the same concentration of hyaluronic acid, ie 20mg/ml, however there are only 10,000 particles per millilitre.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our body. It is the most abundant glycoprotein (ie a complex sugar molecule) in our skin structure providing hydration and suppleness to your skin. Because Restylane® consists of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body and this therefore means that side-effects are rare. The degradation process in the body is natural and the risk of reactions is small. Comprehensive clinical studies confirm the product's properties and show that is proven to be safe.  There was an incident of unilateral blindness reported in a clinic in Auckland in 2017.  The brand of the product is not known, however it is understood that a hyaluronic filler was used by the practitioner.  The incidence of this adverse event is thought to be less than 1:20,000.

What does the treatment involve?

The area that needs volume restoration and rejuvenation and treating wrinkles, is first numbed with topical anaesthetic.

Usually the whole procedure takes less than 30minutes. Small quantities of the product are injected into the skin using a very fine needle. Depending on the product, the individual skin structure and what area has been treated, the effect can last from six months to one year.

Restylane® Indications

As we age, we lose volume in our face, the skin can sag and wrinkles appear. Dermal fillers such as the Restylane® family of products, can address these issues. To find out if Restylane® is right for you, then book a initial consultation with Margaret by phoning 09 3600066 or click on this link to arrange an appointment over the net.

Restylane® is an excellent adjunct to creating an overall solution to fight the effects and appearances of aging.

What can I expect after having had a treatment?

The results are apparent immediate after the treatment. Wrinkles are reduced, and the volume lost through the ravages of time, can be restored.

Is the treatment safe?

Dr Garsing Wong personally administers all treatments.  He is a qualified fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of Urgent Care, and continues to teach physicians and medical students.  Dr Wong holds an honorary post as a clinical lecturer for the Department of General Practice, School of Medicine, University of Auckland.  He is a fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and a member of the World FUE Institute - Hair Transplantation Institute, Belgium, associate member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery - ISHRS.
